Randy Cross

May 23, 2012

Of all the things I’ve experienced as I get older, the one thing I just can’t get used to is seeing good friends pass away.

The musical community of the Eastern Panhandle of WV just lost one of our greatest advocates.

Randy Cross died suddenly on Saturday.

He is one of the kindest people I have ever met. He was thoughtful and always a good listener. He would help musicians find opportunities and help businesses find entertainers. He did all this out of the kindness of his heart. This was his nature as a truly giving soul.

Randy also recorded his own CD, “Crazy ‘Bout Midnight.” He’s one of the first people I knew who recorded their own CD.

He had published a newspaper called “Nightlife Digest” for many years. He listed every venue and all the performers monthly. He loved music and did all he could to promote musicians.

He would write CD reviews and everyone could keep up with the local happenings just by picking up his paper or checking online.

Randy had a great sense of humor and was a fun person with whom to discuss political goings on.

I will always be grateful to Randy for everything he has done for the musical community of which I am part.

I am also grateful for being able to spend some time with him last weekend. We hooked up in Shepherdstown to hear my daughter Gena’s band, the Zion Hearts, at the Blue Moon. After listening to the band, we hung out and talked about his life.

The sadness in his heart still lingered after the end of a long distance relationship with a Romanian woman.

As I thought about our conversation later, I wanted to remind him of the line from Tennyson’s poem, In Memoriam, “Tis better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all.”

Yes, Randy loved with all his heart. And he is and will always be loved by many, many people.

Goodbye, Randy.
